Do I Have To Read It?
August 16, 2008
Often when I run across a good novel, or even after I’ve written an interesting piece, myself; I’ll offer the stories or summaries to my teenagers Usually, their first response is, “Do I have to read it?” And many times, I will reply, “No, you don’t have to read it, but I bet you’ll find it interesting.”
While time has evolved, kids and adults alike, are less inclined to check into local libraries for literary enjoyment. As a stark awakening, I find that most children eagerly seek other forms of entertainment in the forms of multimedia such as video games, cable television, film and yes - the Internet, too. While movies, TV, and the Worldwide Web are phenomenal means of artistic and informational conveyance, they do not adequately serve the human imagination.
Are You A Diamond or A Lump of Coal
August 14, 2008
“Do you want to be a lump of coal or do you want to be a diamond?”
That’s the first question I ask to begin my stress management seminar called “A Diamond is Nothing More Than a Lump of Coal That Handled Stress Very Well.”
We seem to have some interesting misconceptions about the stress in our lives. The most common is that stress is something to be avoided at all costs, and true happiness comes from being totally stress free.
Mastering the Art of Small Talk
August 14, 2008
How’s the weather there?
We use small talk to connect with others in a casual way, and by becoming more mindful of the way we interact with those we don’t know well, we can learn a lot about our confidence level, sense of privacy, and attachment to our own opinions.
Small talk isn’t a replacement for deeper relationships—it’s the first step toward building them. We start by being fully present and talking about what is right there in front of us—the weather, your client’s new car, your neighbor’s flowers, the pictures on the walls in the interviewer’s office.

Meditation comes in several forms, including imaginary thinking that will in due course bring you serenity of mind. To begin any meditation process however you want to be in calm vicinity. Once you find the relax zone you begin to relax by allowing your psyche mind to roam. To engage in subliminal learning you relax and allow the psychic mind to question your own behaviors. Stress Management - Never get too Hungry, Angry, Lonely, Tired, or Scared
August 11, 2008
One of the best professional experiences I have ever had was working for an adolescent drug treatment center for a good part of the eighties. I certainly didn’t make much money there, but what I learned during those six plus years was priceless.
HALTS is an acronym commonly used in substance abuse treatment that can be very usefully applied to stress management. A HALTS approach to managing our stress recommends that we avoid getting too Hungry Angry Lonely Tired Scared.
Floating in Mindfulness - Dealing with Disappointment
August 9, 2008
Feeling disappointed? It’s time to float.
The time-honored approach to disappointment generally involves a fair amount of wallowing followed by a concerted effort to move on. Okay, this can work. But a more mindful approach includes an interim phase between these two. It’s a unique opportunity to “float”.
When things don’t go our way–whether we’re talking about election results, a job interview, a proposal at work, or a relationship–we naturally feel disappointed. We had hoped for the best, even expected the best (hey, we know about human motivation techniques, after all) and this apparent failure hits us pretty hard.
Ancient Wisdom - Can It Still Be Applied Today?
August 5, 2008
*Advice on living a humane and compassionate life.
According to text in the Bible, King Solomon had spoken with God and asked for divine wisdom. As time passed by, King Solomon was approached by two mothers. Both women resided in the same house, both bore children three days apart from one another, and they were both alone in the home together. When the women came to Solomon, one implored, “…she arose at midnight, and took my son from beside me, while thine handmaid slept, and laid it in her bosom, and laid her dead child in my bosom. And when I rose in the morning to give my child suck, behold it was dead: but when I had considered it in the morning, behold, it was not my son, which I did bear.”
Don’t Die with your Dreams still inside You
August 4, 2008
I write and talk a lot about dreams. Primarily because I know we serve an awesome and amazing God, who gave us dreams for an awesome and amazing purpose. We all have a dream to do something great, go somewhere incredible, achieve the unachievable, beat the unbeatable or meet the “unmeetable.” Unfortunately, more often than not, most dreams remain unrealized; silenced by fear and doubt. What’s needed is a renaissance to recapture the spirit and belief we once had as children. We need to remind ourselves in all that we desire to be, have and do… “I can, if I believe I can.”
High Stress Means Low Self Esteem
August 4, 2008
Do you have the desire for a stress free life? Most people do. After all isn’t this why most people are working so hard, to achieve just that? Sounds like a paradox doesn’t it, “I’m working hard to achieve a stress free life”?
Ironically, by the time you think you’ve gotten there, the “stress” you’ve endured as a result of all that work has likely taken such a toll on your health that you are not far from the end of your life. So is a stress free life actually a myth, is it even possible? In order to answer this we need to look closely at what we mean by the word “stress”.
