“We can only be said to be alive in those moments when our hearts are conscious of our treasures.” — Thornton Wilder

If you’re reading this, you may or may not have come across articles or books about this topic before. If you have, this article will not be a waste of your time. The fact is, gratitude is something that we often forget to exercise. And hence, it often becomes the root cause of unhappiness, greed, envy or even physical illnesses. All these will trap and plague us, blinding our eyes to the treasures in our lives laid before us everyday.

Of course, you may think that this is an extreme point of view. Why should I even care about missing the treasures in my every day life? My life is fine the way that it is, and I have the right to pursue my next big house or car, or that up and rising colleague whom I can make use of to advance my career plan. However readers, I strongly urge you to read on to know how you can discover the secret of abundance and wealth and riches.

Gratitude is an important discipline to exercise. As mentioned in the quote above, we are alive only when our hearts are aware of the treasures that we already have. This refers to everything that we possess in our everyday lives. Be it our family, health, bank account, pet dog, neighbors or computer. Of course, you can have many reasons why each of these things is a hassle and frustrating problem instead of being a treasure. However, the fact is that we have the power to change the way we perceive the things around us. And only when we start seeing the things around us as blessings and treasures, then will we discover life in riches and abundance and happiness.

Below are several steps that will help you exercise gratitude.

1)	Set aside time to be thankful, to remember the happy and nice things that have been happening in your life Your first thought for each day will pretty much determine how the rest of your day will be like… Only if you set your mind to do it. Force yourself to look at the bright side. It will surely be tough and seem pointless initially, but in the long run, you will see life in a positive light, and the daily challenges of life will seem much more manageable. You do not need too much time to practice this, simply take one minute each morning. It will make a lot of difference.

2)	Look at the things you have, and not the things you don’t This is definitely something that does not come naturally. With the media and society bombarding us with messages that what we have is not enough, we are always open to greed and desiring things that others have and we don’t. A. Frank Clark once said that, “If a fellow isn’t thankful for what he’s got, he isn’t likely to be thankful for what he’s going to get.” And this is definitely well said. When we are contented with the things that we have, we will not be in a constant state of pursuing after things that we don’t have.

3)	when you face a challenge, be grateful for it Aspire to learn something from each challenge, instead of grumbling about it. That way, challenges will be seen as invaluable periods of growing and learning rather than parts of life that we fear and strive to avoid at all costs. Most people who have a positive and successful outlook of life do not have things easy for them, nor are they problem- free. But they are determined to overcome the problem, and not allow the problem to overcome them.

Of course, the list is non exhaustive. And, different people will have different ways of finding contentment. For some, it may be spending the night having a simple meal with his family. Or for others, it can be a short walk in the park admiring nature and the environment around us. It may also be sitting still, wherever we are, listening to our breathing and being conscious of our body functioning.

Whatever it may be, do not delay anymore. Make it a priority to practice gratitude. And from there, you will find the power, treasures and wealth that you are already possessing.

There are numerous ways to lose your own sense of self. There are things you can do to help preserve that, no matter what happens. This sense of self is essential in any self-improvement program.

*Know your purpose
Identify your life purpose or mission statement and you will have your own exclusive compass that will lead you to your truth north every time.

* Know your values
What do you value most? Is it love, family, freedom? Knowing exactly what is important to you will reassure you in times of doubt.

*Know your needs
Do you have a need to be acknowledged, to be correct, to be in control, to be loved? There are so many people who lived their lives without realizing their dreams and most of them end up being stressed or even depressed.

*Know your passions
What gets your blood flowing? What makes you angry? Determined? Knowing what fuels your emotions will help you know what you need to do.

*Know your inner being
Increase your awareness of your inner wisdom by regularly reflecting in silence. Breathe deeply to quiet your distracted mind. Don’t shun silence and alone time. Relish it. It is during these moments that your true self makes an appearance.

*Know your strengths
What are your positive traits? What special talents do you have? You can increase your self-confidence when you can share what you know to others.

*Give freely
When you are true to yourself, living your purpose and giving of your talents to the world around you, you give back in service what you came to share with others -your spirit – your essence.

They say “To thine own self be true.” This is one of the truest statements ever made. Know yourself and be the you you were born to be.

Whether you’re an executive, manager, professional, or entrepreneur, you need to think ahead. When you do it in a formal sense, it’s called it planning, when you do it informally it’s something like speculating.

Whether you’re planning or speculating, the exercise represents just the tip of the iceberg. For the plans or scenarios to amount to something, they have to be implemented. In turn, that usually involves other people.

Which takes us to the subject of communication: How do you convert those ideas in your head into instructions or position papers or even real plans?

I recommend writing, as in the sense of spending at least a few minutes to put the ideas to paper. Several benefits come out of the writing process:

First, you’ll force yourself to clarify what you’re doing and what you want others to do. As long as an idea remains in our heads, it’s not made accountable, so to speak. That is, we don’t subject our ideas to rigorous scrutiny when they’re just thoughts.

But, when we write out an idea, the strengths and weaknesses show up rather quickly; we force ourselves to look at the idea more critically. When I wrote the publishing plan for Abbott’s Communication Letter, for example, the writing process uncovered many key issues.

But, writing it down assumes even greater importance when we need to communicate with others. Since most thoughts for the future are inherently complex or uncertain, a written version of your plan enables you to explain much more.

As you’ve probably noticed, you can’t really deal with much complexity verbally, unless you’re making a speech or presentation. In face-to-face communication, for example, a train of thought often gets derailed by questions or interjections by the other person.

A written plan also communicates to others a broader scope than a verbal plan. After all, when you’re writing, you can bring in the past, cover the present, and look into the future. Or, you can illustrate your points with more detail than you can in a verbal report.

So, let’s subject this article to the writing test, to see if hangs together.

First, the article opened with the idea of looking or thinking ahead, and I assumed — note, I assumed — this thinking implied future action.

Second, you’ll see the idea to take action, or to get others to take action on our behalf, we need to be clear about the ‘what’ and the ‘why’ before we start. Of course, not every action needs this kind of launch; perhaps I should have said “For important projects….”

Third, I suggested the way to get this clarity is to write it out, but in retrospect, perhaps that simply reflects my bias toward writing. Perhaps you manage well simply by thinking, and don’t need to write.

Fourth, I next listed a couple of benefits that flow from writing, and looking back I see a that I had bigger projects in mind when I wrote it. Smaller projects may not warrant the writing process.

So, all in all, subjecting this article (at least the first part of it) to the writing process did have the desired effect, and I discovered a couple of assumptions that I wasn’t conscious of while writing. And, if I was writing a plan, especially a plan for a big project, those would be worthwhile discoveries.

In summary, writing down your ideas not only helps you clarify your plans or goals, but also helps you communicate what you want others to do or think.

1. Dedicate yourself by all means at the job in hand

2. Empty yourself of all the entanglements since you are none of it and need not take the transient for eternal. You are slave of your own created entanglements, no entanglements, and no slaving business.

3. Your capacity to empty yourself of all the subjects of desire matters at the end of the day. When you are emptied of all the entanglements, what remains is love. All the entanglements are self.

4. Unless you have the capacity to absolutely let go of old, new will not arrive.

5. Everything will be counted for at the end of the day. What matters is absolute devotion. By all means devote yourself.

6. By all means be absolutely loyal to your own vision. Never ever allow the world (objects and people) to take unnecessary space in yourself. Enough is enough. The world has a reality as long as you give it

7. The nature of the blessings is such that it is unseen and works unknowingly. Never be disheartened and seek the company of great ones, either physically or non physically.

8. If you can not get out of any involvement, you are doomed to be lost and suffering in your involvement. By all means stay in this world but be not of this world. This is the way to be sane.

9. Everything is precious if you can transcend the self interest.

10. You are here to contribute in whatever portion you find yourself to be.

11. What will help you ultimately is your own humility and silence. Great work happens in silence.

12. You are likely to suffer if you are not considerate and humble towards others. Harmlessness is the path of least resistance.

13. Suffering is an indication that you need to let go off your superimposition on the reality and let the reality be as it is.

14. Mind and heart are supposed to express love and truth in action and not to seek or possess something. Give it its right place and the house will be put in order.

15. Your unruly mind is the only enemy you have and nothing else. World has no solutions for you and never ever had. You don’t need the world, world needs you.

16. Shift your attention from the things, people and objects to love and truth and you are free.

17. Discard the false with all your powers and eradicate the roots of ignorance.

18. What matters supremely is the motive and nothing else.

But when I look at a television or monitor screen and read horrific reports such as this one, I have to wonder what this world is coming to.

Purportedly, a 31-year old woman (who, by the way has 5 children) was an apparent methamphetamine addict and was breastfeeding her 3-month old son. According to the report, the fatal drug passed through the mother’s breastmilk and caused the death of her tiny infant. Although the child can no longer be brought back to life, the mother was indicted and charged with second-degree murder. She could receive up to life imprisonment.

So, are you angry yet? What type of world are we living in when supposed, responsible parents are so high on drugs that they “accidentally” poison their children with methamphetamine?

Then I hear reports of a bride-to-be being buried today because of radical fundamentalists who get kicks out of bombing innocent people.

Of course, the epitome of news reports is to make our modern, “civilized” public aware of current events, people, places and things. But does it really? If awareness is being raised to the potpourri of countless, violent reports then what has transpired? Yes — more violence.

Like a flashing billboard of red lights, all the warning signs come barreling into our faces. However, how often are these ominous “news stories” going to be taken to heart? We sit back, view news reports, eat our dinners, do our chores, sit back down and watch a movie. No more talk about the 3-month old who was murdered. No more talk about the innocent young bride being bombed. Suddenly, the rose-colored glasses get put across our eyes and we’ve become desensitized to all the negative in our world.

We, as a people, coexist with modern neandrathal-like maniacs who care of nothing but self-satisfaction and egotistically charged, radical perspectives of life. A matter of fact, these nomenclatural fiends of society seem to marvel at their newfound notoriety by playing to society’s camera view.

“I was abused as a child…” “I didn’t have a Nintendo…” “My religion is better than your religion…” “I couldn’t help myself because nobody cared enough about me…” I’ve heard just about enough excuses for irresponsible, childish and violent behavior. It’s about time society take note of these news reports and start proacting.

People, in general, have been brainwashed by alleged leaders of independent cultures, schools, and even parents to think that whatever they do will ultimately be an excuse to do as they please. I’m here to tell you that life is not a bowl of peaches and cream. Life is not easy. Nothing gets handed to people on a silver platter without hard work, dedication and willpower.

If individuals want positive things to happen in their lives, they have to reinforce positive behavior and attitude. I am sick and tired of hearing people say the reason they act the way they do is because they had a hard life. Get over it. Jesus had a hard life and look where He is today.

I look at people like Susan Smith. This woman takes the cake; and is the poster child for what is wrong with society. Here is a young woman who one day decides that she would intentionally trade her children’s lives in on a man who didn’t even want her. She idly stood by and watched her helpless tots drown in a murky lake, then phoned police to say a “black man” had stolen her vehicle and abducted her boys. Sickening. “…but she was sexually abused as child…” screamed her defense attorneys. Amazing what antics defense attorneys can squeeze out in a courtroom. Yet it gets better. Now — if you’d like, you can personally contact Ms. Smith and have a long-distance relationship over the Internet with her.

So, here are a few pointers to positivie living that I’ve come up with — in my own opinion, of course:

If you’ve had a terrible life and can’t deal with it — get counseling for God’s sakes. You are your own person and need to take control of your actions by being in charge.

If you think your religion is better than the next persons, don’t bomb innocent communities. This is not a positive way to prove your point.

If you don’t use drugs, don’t start using them. If you do use drugs, it’s time for you to check into a clinic and get rehabilitated. Many are free and provide financial assistance to those who cannot afford to go to one.

If you decide that you no longer wish to raise your children, please contact social services and get some help. You’ve brought life into this world and that life is your responsibility. Period.

If everything in life has gone wrong and you’re sitting there wondering if life is worth living, think of this: somewhere in the world — children are literally starving to death; somewhere in this world, a person is dying from some god-awful disease; somewhere in this world, people don’t have luxuries like clean, running water and a roof over their heads; somewhere in this world, there is another person going through the same thing you are experiencing.

Positivity is the key to all good things. Always focus your intentions on the overall good of humanity. Promote peace and live peacefully. Accentuate the positive, as positive energy attracts positive energy. Leave this world a better place than in which you came. In closing, I leave you with a quote from an incredible human being — Mohandas Gandhi wrote, “Nonviolence is the greatest force at the disposal of mankind. It is mightier than the mightiest weapon of destruction devised by the ingenuity of man.”

Every successful concern is the result of a One-Man Power. Cooperation, technically, is an iridescent dream things cooperate because the man makes them. He cements them by his will.

But find this Man, and get his confidence, and his weary eyes will look into yours and the cry of his heart shall echo in your ears. “O, for some one to help me bear this burden!”

Then he will tell you of his endless search for Ability, and of his continual disappointments and thwartings in trying to get some one to help himself by helping him.

Ability is the one crying need of the hour. The banks are bulging with money, and everywhere are men looking for work. The harvest is ripe. But the Ability to captain the unemployed and utilize the capital, is lacking sadly lacking. Your man of Ability has a place already. Yes, Ability is a rare article.

But there is something that is much scarcer, something finer far, something rarer than this quality of Ability.

It is the ability to recognize Ability.

The sternest comment that ever can be made against employers as a class, lies in the fact that men of Ability usually succeed in showing their worth in spite of their employer, and not with his assistance and encouragement.

If you know the lives of men of Ability, you know that they discovered their power, almost without exception, thru chance or accident. Had the accident not occurred that made the opportunity, the man would have remained unknown and practically lost to the world. The experience of Tom Potter, telegraph operator at an obscure little way station, is truth painted large. That fearful night, when most of the wires were down and a passenger train went through the bridge, gave Tom Potter the opportunity of discovering himself. He took charge of the dead, cared for the wounded, settled fifty claims drawing drafts on the company burned the last vestige of the wreck, sunk the waste iron in the river and repaired the bridge before the arrival of the Superintendent on the spot.

“Who gave you the authority to do all this?” demanded the Superintendent.

“Nobody,” replied Tom, “I assumed the authority.”

The next month Tom Potter’s salary was enhanced, and in three years he was making ten times this, simply because he could get other men to do things.

Why wait for an accident to discover Tom Potter? Let us set traps for Tom Potter, and lie in wait for him. Perhaps Tom Potter is just around the corner, across the street, in the next room, or at our elbow. Myriads of embryonic Tom Potters await discovery and development if we but look for them.

I know a man who roamed the woods and fields for thirty years and never found an Indian arrow. One day he began to think “arrow,” and stepping out of his doorway he picked one up. Since then he has collected a bushel of them.

Suppose we cease wailing about incompetence, sleepy indifference and slipshod “help” that watches the clock. These things exist let us dispose of the subject by admitting it, and then emphasize the fact that freckled farmer boys come out of the West and East and often go to the front and do things in a masterly way. There is one name that stands out in history like a beacon light after all these twenty-five hundred years have passed, just because the man had the sublime genius of discovering Ability. That man is Pericles. Pericles made Athens.

And today the very dust of the streets of Athens is being sifted and searched for relics and remnants of the things made by people who were captained by men of Ability who were discovered by Pericles.

There is very little competition in this line of discovering Ability. We sit down and wail because Ability does not come our way. Let us think “Ability,” and possibly we can jostle Pericles there on his pedestal, where he has stood for over a score of centuries the man with a supreme genius for recognizing Ability.

For some of us, improving our personal life is finding a new career. If we are working in what we love to do, that rubs off on the way we view things and gives us a better perspective on life. You have to consider the many ways of success we can practice to become a well-rounded person finding his or her dream job. You have to believe in you and what you want. Make it your reality.

With a solid plan, whether to change jobs or start a new business can become a reality. You should never let the fear of change stop you from achieving something that you really want. New is overwhelming for most of us, but if you take time out to research and do proper networking, you’ll find the transition will be less stressful.

Find a career you love

Whether your in mid career, a student, new to the work force, or an entrepreneur it gets difficult to gain satisfaction and accomplishing your full potential when your stuck doing something you hate. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, so why not do something that you like doing. Keep in mind that doing what you like is often complicated but if you would like to improve your personal life here are a few steps:

Decide why you want to change careers:
It is important to know whether you are moving away from something or moving towards something. It is difficult to identify your ideal job when you are overwhelmed by negative issues from your current situation. If you are making a career change, keep all of your options open to make a fresh start.

What are your goals?

Write down a normal aspect of a normal day. Outline what it is exactly that you want. Such as what is your work schedule, the positions and tasks, what is your ideal salary to live comfortably, and are you an entrepreneur at heart. Continuously write these goals in a notebook or journal.

Identify your interests

Your interests do not mean this should be your new job or business, it is just the beginning of self exploration. The key is to identify what truly interests you and how you can incorporate those interests into the work field. What are your favorite hobbies? What books do you like to read? What sections of the newspaper to you turn to first? What are your favorite television shows? After keeping track of this for a week, you should discover a trend that should narrow down to two or three topics of interests.

What are your abilities?

Write down a list of abilities that come easily to you. By doing something that your good at will not only greater your chance of succeeding, but give a sense of satisfaction to your work. You will find that you have hidden abilities. Once you pull up those hidden abilities use them, see how you like them and put them to good use.

Many people walk through life failing to realize who they are and what they are capable of doing to its entirety. Do not be afraid to learn who you are. It will take some time. It took me over thirty years, but it was well worth the trial and errors made along the way to learn who I am.

Failing to remember:
Many people have difficulty remembering. This is a common problem. Don’t let it get you down. Take action to improve your memory. Walk along the jungle lane of memory and explore what is in your mind.

I receive many comments and emails during the course of each month, most all of them are very encouraging and written from the heart. They acknowledge the service I am providing to those that are ready to move further along their chosen path. I receive every once and awhile a special email or comment that reflects what I am attempting to do. I wanted to share this one with you; it came from my guest book this week.

Thank you– you helped me on this day-was feeling sorry for myself because I didn’t think I was special to anyone for any reason- which saddened me very much. I realize now that I am special-I need not prove it.
Beau

I cherish these kinds of comments because they are totally reflective of what my site is about. It is my desire to empower that one person that will change our lives for the better. It is my purpose to bring your power to the surface. To bring awareness into your life so that you may use that power in creating all that you desire into your life.

I read this comment several times before I realized the special gift that this person had brought to me. This comment was written by Beau expressing her new awareness. What I received from it was a message written by Roy to Roy that says I am special and I do not need to prove it.

I am so grateful to Beau, and acknowledge her wonderful gift to me.

I write things, often believing that I am sending them outward to you. They are repeatedly reflected back where they are needed the most.

We are all one and intimately connected at some level of consciousness. Beau is me in another form in time and place reminding me that I am special and I don’t need to prove it. Beau has empowered me to believe that. She is a special angel that I brought into my awareness when I needed it the most.

The wonder of empowerment and awareness is brought into your life everyday when you leave the door open for it. What you seek to learn you bring into your life by teaching it. I sent this message out and Beau sent it back, my door was open and I was reminded.

I helped Beau, but I really helped myself. The power that you hold within you is awesome. There is absolutely nothing that you cannot do if you open your mind to the probabilities of doing it. This is not just a line of BS; it is observable as I have demonstrated. It should always be observable, or what is the use of it. Do not ever blind yourself to what is in front of you, and never look for it. It will reveal itself at the correct time and place.

Notice the little things first before the big ones make themselves known to you. Change is in your life every day and is observable. Stand back from yourself and simply notice it, but do not force it.

Holistic awareness acknowledges any change in any one part of the body will reflect on the whole body. A cause put forth by myself affected the whole body and was brought back to me, cause and effect or Karma was observable. There are no strangers, just an infinite number of individuals existing in the one body that is connected to all. I can not snub my toe without the whole body being affected by it. Beau acknowledged another part of her self and was affected by that awareness. All of us are special as individuals in an ongoing line of communication with each other.

No one is more or less important that the other, in this regard we are perfect in our position along the path as in a water line, where the bucket is passed from one to another. The first bucked is as just as significant as the last and everyone in between.

Your survival is guaranteed for as long as you choose to experience it. When you deny your own uniqueness, you deny all others as well. Acceptance of who you are now, and your right to be who you are, gives passage to your next step in this world and the next.

Know yourself as perfect and you will move towards perfection. You are in control, you are the captain and this is your ship. If you believe that you are not, it is because you have given up your power voluntarily. No one can take from you without your consent at some level of your consciousness.

Beau has claimed her right to be special. There is nothing more she has to do with that awareness consciously. Awareness will bring its own change. She is not the same person she was when she wrote that email and she can never go back. She doesn’t have to prove anything. You can not prove something that you already know yourself to be. Knowing knows and proving is always proving they can never be the same. You can never prove something that you know.
